Publishing during the holiday season

Christmastree“Publishing shuts down during the holidays.”

This might be true if “during the holidays” refers to the week between Christmas and New Year’s. But sometimes I see this statement made in a way that refers to the entire month of December, and I have to say, that’s a myth.

I owed my publisher three deliverables on December 17th: page proof corrections for Gambit, dedication/acknowledgements for Gambit, and revisions to marketing copy for Spy’s Honor. Believe you me, everyone was in the office on that day to receive those things. Meetings are still happening (I’m not there, but I hear about them). Documents and PDFs are still being emailed to me. Publishing is like any other business. People take time off here and there–after all, they have personal lives–but it runs year round.

And speaking of taking time off during the holiday season, I have a manuscript due in early January and a family that hasn’t seen enough of me. This blog is on hiatus until New Year’s. Happy holidays!
