I have a new puppy!

Nerf 7 weeksMeet Nerf, my new puppy! I have always had Golden Retrievers. I like to do dog sports for fun–a little bit of everything. Here is a link to my champion show dog Akira, who passed away in 2007: Akira. I did hunt tests with him, and agility trials, and obedience trials. He loved all of it. I miss him a lot.

At my peak, I had three dogs: Akira, a lovely field bred girl named Spirit, and Akira’s daughter Serri. But then a series of tragedies happened. Akira and Spirit, who were getting on in years, both died of cancer, and through some fluke accident, Serri suffered a spinal cord injury. You know how the humane organizations say that spaying a dog is super safe and only the rarest of dogs will suffer a serious complication? Serri was that rare dog. She suffered a devastating hemorrhage after surgery and nearly died. Blood transfusions saved her life, but she has been permanently crippled ever since. She has partial control over her hind legs and can walk, but just barely.

Nerf with stickThe spay accident happened nine years ago. Serri is ten years old now, in perfect health except for her incurable spinal cord injury, and for all that nine years I have been unable to get another dog. Just couldn’t handle it. Rudyard Kipling said it best:

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Well, I finally succumbed. I’ve given my heart to a dog to tear. Akira was sired by a dog named Topbrass Family Clout, and I found a female dog just a few hours drive from me who was also descended from Clout (albeit more distantly). I bought one of her puppies, and here he is! Zaniri Nerf Blaster, a.k.a. Nerf.

    So precious. I love hearing your struggles and how you use Kipling’s poetry to express the depth of your emotions. Dogs are so special, and you’re an amazing doggie mommy. Congrats on Nerf. He is beautiful!
